Meth – What You Need To Know

Who should do a test?

  • Anyone purchasing a new property anywhere in Southland.
  • Landlords, prior to new tenants moving in.
  • Landlords when tenants are reporting unresolving illness.
  • When recommended by Police eg. after house has been raided.
  • Motel owners.

What is meth?

Methamphetamine is a highly addictive stimulant. Tolerance to meth develops quickly, meaning that the higher doses are necessary to achieve the same effects or “high”. Many users compensate this reduction in affect by taking higher doses, sometimes causing the user to develop dependence because they’re “chasing the high” or attempting to remediate their “lows”… more

Why is it a problem?

It is important to know that the majority of meth contamination is caused by “use” and not “manufacture”. Meth can be smoked, injected, swallowed or snorted. Both smoking and manufacturing leave behind a residue that is toxic, not only to those that reside at the property but, also to everyone that visits the property including family, friends, property inspectors and contractors etc… more

Signs to look for

Many house hold items can be used for the chemicals and precursors required in manufacturing meth, so keep an eye out for large amount of full or empty containers. There could also be pink staining around toilets or drainage areas because for every 1KG of product, there’s 7KG of waste, most of which is dumped down drains… more

Fixing it

The initial screening test is carried out to identify methamphetamine pollution at a property. This is where a sample is taken from 5-6 rooms throughout the house… more

Current NZ Guidelines

The current New Zealand Guidelines recommend that properties where the level of Meth contamination is greater than 0.5μg/100sqcm, decontamination is required… more
